Introducing Spolia

In this article I would like to introduce Spolia, the new publication from Durham University Archaeology Society, which aims to make archaeology more accessible for both our student community and a wider readership of people enthused by archaeology. The publication will feature writing from Durham University Students, predominantly about their interests in archaeology, but we will also explore some of the prevalent issues that exist in our discipline, giving a student perspective on what we are taught by our lecturers.

The word Spolia in archaeology means when there is evidence of reusing stone or decorative structures in new buildings or monuments. This relates to one of the main aims of this publication, to revisit our academic essays and make them more comprehensible, much like the repurposing seen in the archaeological record itself. We hope by doing this readers can learn about many facets of archaeology that interest them within short, readable articles.

We are all open to submissions and suggestions across all topics in archaeology — so feel free to email them to archaeology.society@durham.ac.uk, or message our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/2203255690/.
